Planting a scent garden is like creating your own perfume. Start with a few of your favorite plants and build on that list. “Trap” the fragrance by planting flowers surrounded by walls, evergreens or other windbreaks. Here are some top choices for your summer retreat:

  1. Oriental Lilies – statuesque beauties with an intense fragrance.
  2. Plox – these bloom all summer long and even into the fall.
  3. Roses – roses are an obvious choice, but for a scent garden – steer toward David Austin’s “Jude the Obscure” and “Julia Child” rose bush types.
  4. Nigh bloomers – evening primrose, moonflower vine, flowering tobacco, sweet rocket, four o’clocks,  are all ideal night bloomers with magnificent scents.
  5. Aromatic foliage – these are plants that smell the strongest at midday and include lemon verbena, basil, lavender, rosemary and catmint.
  6. Honeysuckles – The variety lonicera periclymenum “Belgica” releases a fruity fragrance in the early morning and evening. Other fragrant honeysuckles include Halliana and Honeybush.
  7. Water lilies – Also known as the lotus flower is very fragrant and blooms in white, yellow, pink and red. The beautiful lotus flower is at home in natural or artificial ponds.
